My Musical Culture
My name is Zy, and Im a freshman at Converse. I grew up in Greenville, SC and graduated from wade hampton high school. I did colorguard for 4 years, in middle/high school, so I have some musical background. I also did a semester of orchestra, but found out the violin was far too advanced for me. Growing up, I was mostly surrounded by R&B, rap, and more pop/rock towards middle school. I had a very big Michael Jackson phase when I was like 10. I have always been really into all kinds of music, there is no genre I won't listen too.
1. An example (or two) of something that I like right now
As of late, I have been super into glass animals and any other artists that have similar sounding music (alt-j, monsune, mother mother). I like to turn my headphones all the way up and listen to them on full blast. The sounds just scratch my brain. My best friend is into country and it has sort of rubbed off on me, so another example of something I like right now would be "This Bar" by Morgan Wallen. I was very reluctant to it at first, but then I started remembering the lyrics and singing along. Now, it's one of my most repeated songs and I actually don't hate it. Never saw myself being into country music, but I was a huge Taylor Swift fan in 5th grade.

2. An example of music that is deeply important to me
Recently, about a week and a half ago, I lost my grandmother and R&B/hip-hop was her favorite genre so I have been listening to a lot of it lately. She always had it playing around the house, and at family gatherings. I like the older artists, like Lloyd, 50cent, the pussycat dolls, etc. It just makes me really nostalgic and reminisce on my childhood. Kind of my way of carrying on her legacy I guess.

3. An example of a music I don't really connect with
I genuinely love all types of music and there isn't much I wouldn't listen too.
If I had to pick one genre it would be pop, I have kind of strayed away from pop music as I age, however there is a song every now and then with a catchy chorus that will get caught in my head. I've been kinda of stuck in runt music wise, its hard to find anything I actually want to listen to nowadays. So, i'm hoping through this class and these blogs I can find new artists and songs I might also like.
I lost my Grandpa last month and listening to music he liked has been very comforting. He had a CD player in his barn where he spent most of his time, and anytime we would go up there he would have something playing while he worked. He mostly listened to older country songs, so now those are much more special to me. I agree with you on liking all kinds of music. I may not listen to different genres all the time, but i'm sure there is a song I would like from most genres.
ReplyDeleteI love diversity of music taste. Destiny's child is one of my favorite groups. The song "Bills, Bills, Bills" is one classic song because I feel like a lot of women can relate to that song with dealing with a man who doesn't have his things together in a relationship. 50 cent is also one of my favorite rappers of all time. I also like 21 questions the beat and the world play, and the emotion of the song makes it just.
ReplyDeleteHi Zy! It is amazing that you have a musical background! I can relate because I have also danced throughout my middle and high school years. I also had a huge Michael Jackson phase when I was younger. haha I loved the vocals of the artists and music of the song “Cocoa Hooves” that you shared. It had a smooth feeling to it.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is Brilliant Zytaria and very informative, I'm really Blessed to be your mother. This is Great information and you know I'm so old school and the culture and intellectual information of the different artist like I'm almost at the opening of the stage front!! Great Job Zy!!!
